Grandmother acts as surrogate for Weston daughter

The following was submitted by a representative of Cardone Reproductive Medicine and Infertility in Stoneham:
Most grandmothers are content to give their grandchildren presents at the holidays and for birthdays. But Donna Schultz gave her oldest daughter’s third child the most precious gift – the gift of life.
In doing so, she did what only a few women in the world have done.
The majority of women in their 50s are finished with raising their families. They may be thinking about spoiling their grandchildren, if they have them, and/or spending their free time working, saving for retirement or relishing their spouses and hobbies.
Donna Schultz, a nurse who enjoys traveling so much that she and her husband move around the country for her job as a traveling dialysis nurse, certainly fit that description. But when her daughter Makaih McDade of Weston was searching for a surrogate mother to carry her child, Donna did not hesitate to answer her call and do what few 51-year-old women have done – carry their next grandchild through nine months of pregnancy.

Surrogacy and The Law's 'New Normal'

NBC's sitcom, The New Normal tells the story of a well-to-do gay couple that starts a family through a surrogate. The show wants to be sassy (it co-stars NeNe Leakes, an Atlanta 'Real Housewife'), heartwarming (co-stars Georgia King, the surrogate named Goldie, and her wise-beyond-her-years daughter, Bebe Wood, are nothing if not entirely adorable and the objects of our sympathy and affection), and reflective of our post-gay world (Justin Bartha and Andrew Rannells play partners David and Bryan who are in love and filled with pre-parental angst, just like every other couple expecting a child). It also shines a bright light onto a legal world where increasing importance is belied by byzantine complexity.

Senators OK fertility help for wounded vets - including surrogacy as a covered medical treatment

A Senate committee has approved providing fertility counseling and treatment, as well as adoption benefits, to veterans with traumatic injuries that affect their reproductive organs.
The landmark policy change would cover artificial insemination and, if necessary, surrogacy so that service-connected wounds are not a barrier to having a family.
Benefits are aimed at the 1,800 Iraq and Afghanistan veterans who have suffered spinal cord injuries or devastating wounds, mostly from improvised explosive devices, to their reproductive organs.
Fertility treatments are included in S 3313, the Women Veterans and Other Health Care Improvement Act of 2012, passed by the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee on Sept. 12 by voice vote after extended debate over whether surrogacy should be covered.
Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., the veterans’ committee chairwoman and chief sponsor of the bill, said including surrogacy as a covered medical treatment is the only way to ensure that a woman who suffers severe wounds to her reproductive organs would have benefits equal to a male veteran. “We cannot treat one veteran better than the next,” she said.

Carrying these babies for my brother

(CNN) -- It was the perfect summer day for a wedding. The bride was glowing. The groom was handsome. For nine hours, Tiffany Burke photographed the memorable moments.
"I took one break for 15 minutes, to eat really quickly," Burke recalled. "You don't want to miss the shots; that's what you are paid for."
Later that night, she pulled into the driveway of her Bellingham, Washington, home. She walked inside, put down her gear and ran to the bathroom.
"I just started puking and puking and puking," she said. "I was just grateful that I hadn't puked at the wedding or on the bride."
Burke is six months pregnant. She's already had two children. But this time, she's carrying a baby for someone else.
Her past pregnancies were relatively easy. She did have morning sickness with both her sons: Holland, 7, and Blake, 3. This time, it's more severe.
She is sick most days, all day. Anti-nausea medicine helps, but only to a point. Sleep is the only thing that makes her feel better. There are many days the 31-year-old stays in bed until 2 p.m.
"I have my off days, where I am crying a lot. In fact, I may start crying again right now," she said. "But I would totally do it again."

Our extraordinary surrogacy story: The moving photo album telling how mother, 61, carried baby to term for her daughter

A 61-year-old woman, who gave birth to her daughter's baby boy, has told of her remarkable journey as a surrogate grandmother.
Kristine Casey, from Chicago, was a gestational carrier for her daughter, Sara Connell, and her husband Bill, who suffered heartbreaking infertility struggles. She successfully delivered their son Finnean in February last year.
Now, the family's unconventional journey has been told in Mrs Connell's new memoir, Bringing in Finn: An Extraordinary Surrogacy Story.
The book relates how the Connells decided in 2004 to try to have a baby, but Mrs Connell, now 36, soon discovered she wasn't ovulating.
After undergoing infertility treatment at the Reproductive Medicine Institute in Evanston, she became pregnant but delivered stillborn twins, and later suffered a miscarriage.
Lucky little boy: Finnean Connell pictured at Prentice Women's Hospital in Chicago, the day of his birth
Mrs Connell's mother, who went through her own pregnancies without incident, was the hope the family needed. They came up with a unique plan, leading to Finnean Lee Connell's birth early last year.
In her honest memoir, Mrs Connell recounts the tragedy and heartbreak of losing pregnancies; how she opened up to the idea of her own mother carrying her child; and the bond between mother and daughter that blossomed as a result of their unique experience together.

Jill Hawkins, Britain's most prolific surrogate mother, is calling it a day

What sort of woman offers to be a surrogate for a childless couple? An incredibly altruistic one, of course. And what sort of person goes on to offer three more women the chance of a baby they could never have naturally? I think we’ll agree that when she did just that, Jill Hawkins, a 48-year-old legal secretary from Sussex, entered the realms of living sainthood.

But what about when she popped out two more? Isn’t that a little weird? And then another four, including twins, bringing the grand total to 10? That, most people would agree, is rather disturbing.
