From the time she was a little girl, Katie Andrews of Bryan dreamed of being a mother. But when she was just 15, she found out that she would never carry a child. Katie was born without a uterus.
"I knew that I could have a biological child. I just couldn't carry it," Katie said.
When she and Jarod married in 2007, they knew they would have to use a surrogate to have a child, but they never imagined who would offer to carry the baby Katie could not.
"Courtney came to us and said that she would like to do this for us," Katie recalled.
Courtney Guest is Katie's little sister. Just a sophomore at Texas A&M University, Courtney told her mom, Susan Guest, that she wanted to help her older sister.
"I just patted her on the head and said, 'Darling, that's really sweet, but you can't do that,'" Susan said.
"At first, I told her no because she was 19 at the time," Katie added. "We said, 'That's so sweet -- that's such a sweet offer for you to do that for us.'"
But Courtney was determined to help her sister. She even went to the doctor on her own to be cleared for surrogacy.
"I have this young, healthy body that can carry a child. Why should I keep it to myself when I can do this great thing for her," Courtney explained.

Surrogacy news - Province to review rules involving surrogate couples

THE minister responsible for Manitoba's Vital Statistics Agency says he will investigate whether rules and procedures can be changed to avoid the frustration suffered by a city couple whose names weren't listed on the certificates of their twin sons' births.
"We're going to continue to look at what is happening in other jurisdictions and see what we can do to help make it easier for couples in this situation," Jim Rondeau said Tuesday.
Rondeau was responding to the story of Mike Olson and Lisa Seel, parents of twin boys born Dec. 24. The babies were carried to term by Seel's sister, Averill Stephenson, following embryo transplants.
The couple got legal advice on how to proceed with the surrogacy, but were unprepared for how Vital Statistics would record their sons' births. Stephenson was listed as the mother on the birth certificates, and since she is legally married, her husband was automatically listed as the dad. Olson and Seel now have to go to court to have the birth certificates reflect the reality they are, in fact, the parents.
But both Rondeau and the director of Vital Statistics, Susan Boulter, said Tuesday the couple's lawyers should have warned them they would have to apply to the courts to make the changes.

Foreign gay couples can't have surrogate babies in India, says Home Ministry directive

Foreign couples in live-in relationships, same-sex couples and singles will not be able to have surrogate babies in India anymore.

A Home Ministry directive on surrogacy is badly affecting foreigners seeking to become parents in India through surrogacy. The Home Ministry has asked the External Affairs Ministry to issue visas only to opposite sex couples seeking to have a surrogate baby in the country. The ministry has further said such couples should be married for at least two years.

Though there is no law on surrogacy in India, the Indian Council of Medical Research has drafted Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act, 2010 which deals with the issue. According to the Bill, assisted reproductive technology will be available to all persons, including single persons, married couples and unmarried couples, a member of the drafting committee said.

Vietnam’s Ministry of Justice is considering legalizing surrogacy among other proposed changes to the country’s 13-year-old Family and Marriage Law.
Duong Dinh Hue, head of the civil and economic desk at the ministry, said at a Tuesday meeting that the ministry aims to amend the law in a “fundamental and comprehensive” way, Tuoi Tre reported.
Tuong Duy Luong, vice presiding judge of the Supreme People’s Court, said surrogacy is not a simply a legal issue, but a sensitive social concern.
Luong said the country should recognize the service for humanitarian purposes, as there are many women who are unable to become pregnant due to medical reasons. “They are the disadvantaged. It’s inhuman if we do not support them.”

Surrogacy India - Baby boom: Indian women giving birth to U.S. babies

A lot of businesses go to India for inexpensive labor and it turns out American couples are doing the same. One village has become a center for cut-rate surrogacy, offering young women who will be carrying babies to term.



For some couples surrogacy is their only chance to create a child. Each year hundreds of Americans go to India for the service.
Dana and Sumanth Chandra have been trying to have a baby ever since they married 14 years ago in Chicago.
They believe their newborn son Ethan is a miracle -- because doctors in the United States told Dana she'd never have a child.
"I could just spend my entire life just standing right here," she says while looking at her baby son.
The couple finally realized their dream of starting a family by traveling 8000 miles to India -- the country where Sumanth grew up.
Ethan was born to a surrogate mother at a clinic in the dusty town of Anand -- a hub in India's multimillion dollar surrogacy industry.
An embryo created from the Chandra's own sperm and egg was implanted in an Indian woman -- who was paid to carry their child.

I will try to open the first act of our blog by introducing ourselves with a few words. We are a gay couple from San Diego, and we are on our way to fulfilling one of our dreams: becoming parents. After a few ups and downs, we came to the conclusion that Surrogacy would be our best option and, after a few more ups and downs, we decided that we would hire WeeCare Partners USA to fulfill our dream.

We are now 18 weeks pregnant.

Surrogacy in India is not for the faint of heart. Like all the people who are currently going through the same experience, we have had our fair share of stress, but we have met wonderful people along the way...

First of all, we have met another San Diego gay couple who just had two baby boys. Victor has basically enabled our dream, connecting us with more wonderful people, such as Dr. Meenakshi Puranik who is supervising the whole process. We are very thankful to have met such an amazing and talented woman. We also have to thank our egg donation agency and our egg donor, who has been wonderful and charming. We would also like to mention our driver, Sachin, who has guided us through the chaos of Mumbai’s traffic.
