A gift of life: Surrogate motherhood is a way of life for LaDonna Woodmanssee

OB-GYN Andrea Miller had a unique opportunity in 2011 — to deliver her own baby. That's because Miller's baby was being born to a surrogate mother, LaDonna Woodmansee, who carried the Miller's baby for nine months.

Instead, Miller chose stand on the sidelines of the birth experience while a close colleague delivered little Addison Miller in August of 2011. The moment the baby was born, she was swaddled and placed into the waiting arms of her mother, Andrea Miller.
There wasn't a dry eye in the delivery room as the Millers finally saw their baby. The tears were also in gratitude to Woodmansee for making the couple's dream of parenthood a reality.
“She's the real star of this story,” Steve Miller said. Woodmansee has also been a star for two other families for whom she served as a surrogate.

Laws concerning surrogacy
Woodmansee said that at age 36, she might consider one last surrogacy, but knows that any more than that could be too hard on her body. But she said if the Millers do decide to give Addison a sister or brother, she hopes to carry the baby.
“Besides having my own kids, surrogacy is the best thing I've ever done,” she said. It's not about money — in Oklahoma, laws are vague on surrogacy.

Surrogacy in India -Indian government move to ban foreigners from surrogacy

Mumbai: The Union Health Ministry's move to tighten rules for surrogacy through the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Bill 2010 which is to be introduced in Cabinet has created a controversy.

According to sources, the proposal aims to ban foreigners from surrogacy in India and leaves it open only to married, infertile, Indian origin couples.

Nancy Juvonen Fallon and Jimmy Fallon have come out to reveal their secret that they used a surrogate to conceive their newborn baby.

The 38 year old late night TV host and his 46 year old wife have had difficulty trying to conceive, Jimmy Fallon revealed on the Today show this week, and that was their reason to use surrogacy.
However, he also explained how the couple decided to keep the surrogacy a complete secret, even from close friends and family. That meant that when daughter, Winnie Rose Fallon, was finally born then they had to be careful with how they announced her sudden arrival and not hurt any close friends' feelings.
However, they also had a little fun with how they told the world the news. A rep for Fallon said in July that they were overjoyed at being first-time parents and the "arrival of their beautiful daughter," however, the rep did not note that Nancy Juvonen Fallon did not carry Winnie.

Rebecca, a former South East resident, has made the choice to become a surrogate mother. It's a decision she said came easily after a family member underwent a serious operation.

"I was thirteen and my sister had to have one of her ovaries removed. She had a cyst and since then, she was told she may have trouble getting pregnant herself...I knew at the time that if she couldn't... I would step up and act as a surrogate for her.
"It's always been something in the back of my mind...one day that I would do for somebody."
A mother of two already, Rebecca said her own pregnancies were uncomplicated and she felt she could help another couple unable to conceive naturally.
At first she didn't tell her husband but after her second child Taylor was born, she started to explore the possibility of becoming a surrogate further.
"Seeing my two kids and feeling as much love for them as I do, I couldn't imagine someone not being able to have that for themselves," she said.

The legal aspects of surrogacy
Rebecca said although commercial surrogacy was illegal in Australia, the intended parents would pay for her medical and legal costs, including small things such as travel to doctor's appointments and anti-nausea medication.
She said the most difficult part, once undergoing rigorous counselling was the legal minefield.
Even things such as who would hold the baby first in the delivery room were all written in a legal document and signed by both parents.
"We know when that baby is born, she will hold the baby first.
"That's what keeps you going through all the hours of counselling and paperwork...we're both looking very much forward to that moment now."
